The Meezaan Organization for Human Rights continued its legal awareness program through a series of public lectures, holding its second event in the city of Arraba on the evening of Tuesday, May 6, 2025. The lecture, titled “Legal Pitfalls in Times of War,” took place at the Othman Ibn Affan Mosque, hosted by the local group “Descendants of al-Siddiq.”
The event opened with a welcoming speech by Mr. Amir Al-‘Arabi, who emphasized the importance of vigilance and legal awareness during these critical times. He warned that “words can be criminalized, and emotions can be prosecuted, in an era where standards are turned upside down.”
The lecture was delivered by Attorney Omar Khamaisi, Director of Meezaan, who addressed several pressing legal issues, primarily the growing number of arrests and summonses targeting both minors and adults without clear evidence. He highlighted the alarming increase in the use of administrative detention, particularly after October 7, 2023, noting that this policy has shifted from being a rare exception to involving dozens, even hundreds, of cases annually.
Khamaisi also discussed the crackdown on freedom of expression, even in its most limited forms, including interactions on social media platforms. He touched on recent amendments to the Anti-Terrorism Law, which now encompass expressions of emotion and digital activity. He further pointed out the double standards in law enforcement between Arab and Jewish citizens.
Attorney Khamaisi warned of the dangers of communication with foreign media or organizations, which could be interpreted under prevailing legal definitions as “contact with a foreign agent.” His lecture included key legal advice, such as the importance of remaining completely silent during arrest, insisting on meeting with a lawyer, and avoiding any statements prior to that.
The session concluded with an open discussion, during which attendees raised questions and shared concerns regarding the issues addressed in the lecture.
