Mizan Human Rights Center recently filed a petition with the Central Court in Nazareth against a decision by the Ministry of the Interior and the Immigration Authority, which refused to issue a certificate confirming that a deceased individual from Palestinian territories inside Israel, along with his family, did not obtain Israeli citizenship or permanent residency.
The petition details that the Palestinian family residing in Jordan is facing a complicated legal situation. The father of the family was born in Palestinian territories inside Israel and left for Jordan in 1953, where he settled, married, and had children. Despite the passage of many years, the family members have been unable to obtain any legal status in Jordan, as the Jordanian authorities require an official certificate from the Israeli Ministry of the Interior confirming that the father and his children did not acquire citizenship or residency in Israel.
The Israeli authorities have refused to issue this certificate, despite the clear legal status of the family, leaving them in a state of “legal limbo” between the two countries. They are unable to prove their legal status in Jordan, nor can they return to their father’s homeland due to Israeli legal restrictions.
Attorney Mustafa Suhail Mahamid from Mizan filed the petition, pointing out that the Ministry of the Interior ignored the submitted official documents, preventing the family from securing their legal rights.
Mizan continues to follow up on the case through appeals and formal petitions, urging the court to issue a ruling that will restore the family’s legal and human rights.
