Ahead of the Verdict: Court Hears Closing Arguments in the Case of Martyr Diyar Omari

The hearings in the case of Martyr Diyar Omari from the village of Sandala continued this morning, Wednesday (October 22, 2025), at the Nazareth District Court. A three-judge panel heard both the oral and written closing arguments presented by the prosecution and the defense in the case of Denis Boukin, accused of killing Diyar Omari in an incident that took place on May 6, 2023.

Speaking about the session, Attorney Omar Khamaisi, Director of Meezaan Organization for Human Rights and legal representative of the victim’s family, explained that the session was lengthy, as both sides presented their summaries orally and in writing. He noted that the court concluded the hearing by requesting discussions between the two sides to explore the possibility of reaching an agreement based on the principle of conviction.

“The question now,” Khamaisi said, “is what specific charge the conviction will be based on. There are several legal proposals, each carrying different sentencing implications.”

He added that the prosecution called for convicting the defendant of intentional murder, while the defense presented a summary demanding his full acquittal from all charges.

Regarding the family’s position, Khamaisi stated:

“The family’s stance is clear – the killer must be sentenced to the longest possible prison term. Although no verdict can bring Diyar back or heal the family’s pain, they remain committed to attending the hearings and speaking the truth: Diyar was killed in cold blood.”

Khamaisi further indicated that the court has set November 23, 2025, as the date for delivering the verdict, whether it be a conviction or—God forbid—an acquittal as demanded by the defense. He added that an internal session might be held at the end of this month if the parties reach an agreement, though such a scenario seems unlikely at this stage.

For his part, Ahmad Omari, the father of the martyr, said:

“We lost our son, and no punishment can compensate for that loss. Our son was killed because he was Arab. Everyone saw how it happened—the crime was recorded on video, showing clearly that the killer left his home intending to murder an Arab. We hope the court imposes the harshest possible sentence and that the murderer remains behind bars for life.”
